What is a Pneumatic Caisson?
In the Pneumatic Caisson Method, pneumatic refers to air, and caisson means a box or case. In Japan, it is also called the Senkan (submerging box) method.
A reinforced concrete box (structure) is constructed above ground, and a working chamber is created at the bottom of the structure. By sending compressed air into this chamber, equivalent to the groundwater pressure, the intrusion of groundwater is prevented.
Excavation and soil removal are carried out within the working chamber, allowing the structure to sink. This method is widely used for foundations of bridges and buildings, as well as for sewage pumping stations, underground regulating reservoirs, shafts for shield tunnels, and main structures for subway and road tunnels.
