Vase - antique vintage Staffordshire spill vase - courting couple, tree, deer
Staffordshire
This antique 19th-century English Staffordshire “flatback” spill vase features a courting couple in 18th century attire, with a deer between them, standing at the base of a tree. Commonly used to hold tapers for lighting fires. This antique is an early Staffordshire spill vase from the Victorian era, hand-painted and made of earthenware. The vase was traditionally used to hold spills, which were rolled paper or wood sticks used to transfer fire from a fireplace to light lamps or candles. The smooth, unglazed base shows the classic crazing (craquelure) and lack of an official maker's mark, confirming this is an authentic, original 19th-century Staffordshire flatback spill vase. See all photos for condition and details. There is a chip on the base. Typical glaze crazing as expected for age. 4.5”wx6.5”h
