Differences in Shichirin Manufacturing Methods
Shichirin manufacturing methods can be broadly divided into nerimono (kneaded) and kiridashi (carved) methods.
The nerimono method involves crushing diatomaceous earth into powder, kneading it, and then pouring it into a mold for shaping.
This method allows for mass production and can be made at a lower cost, but the shichirin becomes heavy, and as it deteriorates, it will crumble from the outside.
On the other hand, the kiridashi method involves carving each block of diatomaceous earth, mined from underground, with a special chisel, and then firing it in a wood-fired kiln for two days and two nights.
Because this method utilizes natural diatomaceous earth, it has very high thermal efficiency, is durable, and surprisingly lightweight.
