Description
Scientific Name: Colossopus sp.

Common Name: Macho Grasshopper / Lobster Grasshopper
Chinese Name: 巨像螽

This is a nocturnal bush cricket endemic to southwestern Madagascar.
It was briefly a trending topic on Twitter.
It belongs to a genus with only three species.
We highly recommend it for its incredibly cool, muscular, and buff forelegs!

The light brown, cigar-shaped eggs are laid one by one in the soil. Although only 6mm when laid, they grow significantly over 3 months to a year. Females lay 150 to 200 eggs in their lifetime. Adult females and males have similar body colors, but the upper lip is reddish-orange in females and yellowish-orange in males. When encountering a foreign object, adults stand on their hind legs, spread their forelegs, and open their mandibles in a defensive posture. When adopting this posture, adult males emit a high-pitched chirp, while adult females do not. If a foreign object approaches, C. grandidieri will grasp it with its forelegs and attempt to bite with its mandibles.

We will ship an individual, likely a male, from Morondava, Madagascar. It was last molted in September 2025. It is about two sizes larger than the females. My measurement of its body length was 64mm.
