Description
Scientific Name: Asilidae sp.
The larvae live in soil or decaying wood, feeding on other insects such as beetle larvae. Adults prey on other insects and suck their body fluids. Some species, like the robber fly (Asilidae), may also attack vertebrates such as livestock and humans.
The name Mushi-biki-abu (虫引虻) originates from mushibiku-abu (虫を間引く虻), meaning fly that thins out insects, referring to their predatory nature.
