【Extra Thick ♀】 Tin Beetle Yoroi Korogisu Bradyporus Riock Orthoptera
Scientific Name: Bradyporus dasypus
Common Names: Yoroi Korogisu / Buriki Korogisu / Burikorogisu
English Name: Bronze Glandular Bush-cricket
Bradyporus dasypus, more precisely Bradyporus (Bradyporus) dasypus, is a species of grasshopper belonging to the subfamily Bradyporinae, which includes the genus Ephippiger, native to southeastern Europe. It is known in English by the common name Bronze Glandular Bush-cricket, named after its dark, metallic coloration reminiscent of bronze.
Adults can reach up to 6 cm in body length, making them one of the largest and heaviest insects in Europe. They are omnivorous, feeding on plants as well as other animals, including mammalian carcasses and prey insects.
While not listed as endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), their populations appear to be declining due to human activities, particularly in the northern parts of their range.
This metallic coloration, highly unusual for Orthoptera, suggests a physical rather than pigmentary origin, meaning the microstructure of the exoskeleton diffracts light, producing a metallic reflection. This phenomenon is also known in other insects such as Morpho butterflies, many beetles, and the praying mantis genus Metallyticus.
